A golf ball drone drop is exactly what it sounds like: hundreds of numbered golf balls released from a drone hovering above a green, with the ball that lands closest to the pin winning a cash prize. At the HBA of Greater Toledo's Annual Golf Outing on Friday, July 24 at The Legacy Golf Club in Ottawa Lake, Michigan, up to 500 balls fell at 8:15 in the morning with a guaranteed $1,000 winner. Great Lakes Home Remodeling co-sponsored the drop alongside Habitec Security.
The rules are simple. Participants buy numbered golf balls for $25 each, or two for $40, in the weeks before the outing. On the morning of the event, a drone carries the whole batch above a designated green and lets go. The ball that comes to rest closest to the pin takes the prize: $1,000 guaranteed, growing as high as $2,500 depending on how many balls sell. You do not have to golf to enter, and you do not even have to be there to win.

There is something undeniably fun about watching it happen. At 8:15 a.m., fifteen minutes before the shotgun start, the drone rose over the green, paused, and released its cargo. Hundreds of golf balls rained down at once, bounced, scattered, and settled. Somewhere in that pile, one number won the day before anyone had hit a single shot.
The Annual Golf Outing is the HBA of Greater Toledo's biggest member event of the year, and this one, presented by Straitline Fence Company, drew more than 160 registered golfers and guests. The driving range opened at 7 a.m., foursomes rolled out at the 8:30 shotgun start, and the day wrapped with skills contests, skins, team prizes, and a late lunch inside the Legacy clubhouse.
The HBA itself is the trade association for the Toledo area's home building industry. Builders, remodelers, suppliers, and service companies belong to it, and it advocates for the industry, connects the people who build and improve homes across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, and runs the annual Parade of Homes, which this year takes place September 11 through 20.
Great Lakes Home Remodeling co-sponsored the Golf Ball Drone Drop with our friends at Habitec Security, and four of our own made the trip: CEO Doug Farr, VP of Marketing Matt Nichols, Toledo Sales Director Billie Drake, and Detroit Sales Manager Nicholaus Nurmikko.

We spend our days working on homes across this region, and the HBA is where the people who do that work compare notes, raise standards, and occasionally watch golf balls fall out of the sky. Supporting it is an easy call. Congratulations to this year's winner, and thanks to the HBA for another great morning at Legacy. We will see everyone at the Parade of Homes in September.
